COVID Testing: Which Test Makes Sense?

COVID testing choices depend on symptoms, exposure, timing, travel or workplace rules, and whether confirmation is needed. The right test is the one that fits the question you are trying to answer.

Rapid tests

Rapid antigen tests can be useful when symptoms are present and a quick answer is needed. A negative result may not fully rule out infection, especially early after exposure.

PCR testing

PCR tests are more sensitive and may be preferred when confirmation is important. They can detect smaller amounts of virus, but results may take longer depending on the service.

When to seek care

Testing is not a substitute for medical assessment. Shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent fever, dehydration, confusion, or worsening symptoms should be reviewed promptly.

If you test negative but symptoms continue or exposure risk is high, ask whether repeat testing or medical review is needed.
