How to Read Lab Results Without Guessing
Lab reports can be useful, but they can also create worry when a number is slightly outside the printed range. The safest way to understand lab results is to review them with the reason the test was ordered, your symptoms, and your medical history.
Reference ranges are guides
A reference range shows what is common in a comparison group, but it does not automatically diagnose disease. Some results vary with age, sex, pregnancy, medication, hydration, recent meals, and the lab method used.
Trends often matter more than one number
For chronic conditions, doctors often compare results over time. A cholesterol result, kidney function test, blood count, or blood sugar marker may be more meaningful when viewed alongside previous tests.
Ask what action is needed
The most important question is not only whether a result is high or low. Ask whether it needs repeat testing, lifestyle change, medication, imaging, specialist referral, or no action at all.
Do not change prescribed medication based only on a lab report without speaking to your doctor.
