PapSmear: What It Checks and When to Go

A Pap smear checks cells from the cervix to look for changes that may need monitoring or treatment. It is an important part of cervical cancer prevention.

What the test looks for

The test is designed to detect abnormal cervical cell changes. Some programs may also include HPV testing depending on local practice and patient risk.

When to book

Timing depends on age, previous results, symptoms, pregnancy history, and doctor advice. If you have bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods, book a consultation rather than waiting for routine screening.

How to prepare

Ask the clinic if you should avoid intercourse, vaginal medication, or douching before the test. Try not to book during heavy menstrual bleeding unless the doctor advises otherwise.

An abnormal result does not always mean cancer, but it does mean follow-up instructions should be taken seriously.
